Associated with KAPS (Kerala Association of Professional Social Workers) Idukki Chapter for commemorating Teachers Day. The program also honoured best outgoing students and rank holders of PG and UG Programmes from Social Work Departments across Idukki. Ms. Mintu Issac from Santhigiri College received the honours for one of the best outgoing students. The Programme was attended by 120 students, faculty and professional social workers from Idukki. The programme was inaugurated by veteran Social Worker Rev. Fr. Joye James, Vice President of Indian Social Institute Bangalore and Secretary of Jesuit Higher Education in South Asia, keynote address was delivered by Dr. Ipe Varughese, Secretary KAPS, Kerala. Ms. Anne Sharon Kappan, Santhigiri College felicitated the event along with other Heads of Social Work Departments from across Idukki. Students of Santhigiri College also performed cultural programmes.
A video was made by the first year students (2020- 2022 batch) of the Department of Social Work in collaboration with Purapuzha Grama Panchayat CDS Gender Resource Centre and Snehitha Help Desk, Idukki, Kudumbasree Programme. The video, which is 2 and half minutes long, highlights the issues in relation to Dowry and Domestic Violence in Kerala appeals to the general public to take a stand against these social evils. This video was made in light of a few women in Kerala allegedly committing suicide due to dowry demands and domestic violence.
The Department of Social Work associated with GNOSIS, Hyderabad for the National Webinar on Religion and Peace. The programme aimed at enlightening the youth on Religious Peace, Inter faith response to Covid 19 pandemic. There were young speakers from all over India and Ms. Mary George Semester 2 student of MSW (2020- 2022 batch) presented a paper on Interfaith Dialogue in Action and Religious Contribution during Covid 19.
Former Student of MSW Santhigiri College, Ms. Olivia Thomas, addressed the passing out batch student (2019-2021) on the process and procedures of starting an NGO. Ms. Olivia Thomas is the Secretary and Project Director of GNOSIS Hyderabad.
2019-2021 batch of MSW Students brought forth a magazine, E- magazine and blog compiling their literary and art work. Srishti showcases poems, short stories, photographs, drawing and other artwork of the students. The magazine was released by Rev. Fr. Paul Parakattel CMI, Principal Santhigiri College of Computer Sciences, the blog released by Rev. Fr. Dino Kallikattu CMI, Bursar Santhigiri College of Computer Sciences and the e- magazine released by Rev. Fr. Jince George CMI, Principal, Christ College Malur.
The Department of Social Work celebrated the 2021 World Environment Day by faculty and students taking part in Gifted Tree, planting trees in their homes. Individual photos and videos were taken and complied to form a unified photograph. The Department also organised a troll competition called “Shobha Chirikunnilla” for the students of Santhigiri College on the theme of environment. The day culminated with a Webinar by Dr. GS Madhu, Idukki District Coordinator for Kerala Haritha Mission.
The Department of Social Work joined hands with the Edavetty Grama Panchayat Local Self Government Department and Primary Health Service, Edavetty in offering free Telecounselling to Covid – 19 Patients and families in the panchayat. This was completed under the circumstances where the panchayath saw a soaring number of Covid 19 patients and were struggling to bring the TPR rates down. The panchayat was divided in clusters and students were assigned to each cluster to offer counselling to patients and their relatives. The drive was seen to be a success with TPR coming down to below 10% in par with the neighbouring areas.
Social Work Department conducted an online training on a practical Yoga session to combat the negative vibes of the pandemic with the second lockdown declared in India. Department also initiated a programme called positive vibes to practice Yoga and share positive thoughts and experiences to balance the surge of anxiety and isolation caused as a result of the pandemic and a subsequent second lockdown. The yoga session were introduces by Mrs. Saraswathi Antharganam, Yoga teacher and faculty of the commerce department Santhigiri College of Computer Sciences. Subsequent sessions were also dealth with by Mr. Prashant VP, Yoga trainer and faculty of the Department of Graphics and Media at Santhigiri College.
